Dodsley's Thoughts - Equestria Girls
The Equestria Girls movies are a weird thing. Essentially, Hasbro wanted that Monster High fanbase and fused MLP with it in order to make some cash. What came out was 4 movies, some shorts, some movie/long episodes and a few specials. The movies, in hindsight, seem like a testing ground for some of the stories and characters we'd see later in the main show and I'll get to that in Rainbow Falls. I've wanted to discuss them for a while as they seem to be rather divisive. You either love them, hate them or don't give a crap about them. Let's see how the first movie pans out. The first movie starts after the events of Season 3. An odd placement considering the whole Twilight thing and this movie not addressing it at all. It doesn't really matter just a thing to note. Twilight and her friends are staying in the castle. They do show that Twilight is struggling to adjust to her newfound status as well as her wings, which is good enough for this movie. We get some good comedy and moments

It's a spike episode and not only that but a lore episode. This is the first time Dragon culture is really discussed apart from the gem thing. Let's see how it goes. The episode with Twilight sorting shenanigans and Spike fauning over a fire ruby. Rarity comes over and Spike gives her the jewel after some prodding. They do make it pretty clear that Rarity's main reason for wanting the jewel is Spike is going to eat it. It's still a little odd that Rarity basically seduces the gem of him, whether the scenes were in Spike's head or not. Still, Rarity is overjoyed and it gets across that Spike is pretty generous. A bit of Spike comedy and then it's his birthday. The mane 6 come over and shower him in gifts. Just going to say this now, this episode has really good comedy, nothing out of this world but it gets a solid chuckle most of the time and keeps a really fun tone. Rarity mentions that she is making capes for the mane 6 after being inspired by the genorisity of Spike. I've just

This episode starts with Rarity in Canterlot as Celestia's guest. The scene is funny and quite sweet. It also sets up the running gag of the Porter pony struggling with Rarity's luggage. If it works for you, fine. I find it pretty repetitive and wish they'd put a spin on it like in Rarity Takes Manehattan. Anyway, the plot starts with Rarity and Opal at the cafe. Opal is great in this episode by the way. Rarity is happy in her surroundings and is met by two upper class ponies who comment on her hat. However, she is revealed to be from Ponyville and rejected as 'country'. Hurt, Rarity storms to her hotel to make Twilight a perfect birthday gown. Her rushing leads to her bumping in Fancy Pants who is impressed by her connections to the princess and her fine materials. He invites her to the Wonderbolts race. Rarity then battles with going or working on the dress but eventually goes. Her joy in living her dream is very well portrayed and her guilt is also well portrayed. She goes to the

Diary of Bad Animation - The Mysterious MareDoWell
It's been well over a year. Mostly due to being busy and losing the drive for this but I thought I'd give it another go and what better episode to start on. The black sheep of the show, the Mysterious Mare-Do-Well. The episode starts with a Rainbow Dash fan club meeting. It's odd, doesn't really match the tone of the show and brings up a lot of questions that the show doesn't want to answer. This probably should have been later in the episode, it kind of makes the rest of the episode make even less sense. Especially because it's not just fillies and colts in the club. Anyway, the episode properly starts with Rainbow Dash saving a filly trapped in a well, Rainbow is surprised by the size of the crowd and is pretty humble. I guess the opening is to cement that there is a fan club for Rainbow but Scootaloo is the only one who is in most scenes and we already knew she admired Rainbow. Rainbow then stops a stroller falling down a hill, makes a bad joke and then makes sure to grab the

Of all the shows currently airing, Steven Universe is probably the one I feel deserves more. The show is a phenomenal mix of characters, drama, important social messages and fun that really deserves more from Cartoon Network. The show is often stuck to Steven Bombs, weekly marathons of 5 new episodes. This means the show often loses a bit of the tension that it creates due to long hiatus breaks and a general lack of information on when and how episodes are going to air. No bomb episodes are quite hard to find unless you know where to look outside of the US and they aren't exactly hyped. The biggest Steven Universe commercial I've seen in the

Diary of Bad Animation - May The Best Pet Win
This episode starts with a creepy dream sequence complete with a slight jump scare. Besides giving this episode a start, there wasn't much point to the dream, it was really out-there. The episode continues this oddly frantic pace as the mane 6 arrive playing with their pets. Pinkie explains why they didn't invite her and RD agrees, there is a decent Fluttershy joke and then RD goes back to her nap. The mane 6 continue to play near her though and this breaks her, RD wants a pet. This then gives us another weird moment where Fluttershy gets excited over the possibility. It's funny but this episode starts so weirdly that it kind of hurts this mo

Diary of Bad Animation - The Cutie Pox
This episode starts with bowling. There is some nice banter here but the scene does drag a little. One of the bigger issues with these CMC episodes is that they often just go between tasks which removes any tension or interest as these tasks aren't going to lead to a cutie mark. Its not so bad when they focus on one task like they do in later episodes as at least there is a story to invest in there instead a bunch of random skits that come off as filler. Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle take this new failure well but Applebloom is noticeably upset and nothing cheers her up, not even Pinkie. She then heads into the forest and meets little resistanc

This has been a long time coming. Why has this episode taken so long? Well, one reason was I thought another episode was next and I am more excited to review that than this, another is that I can't really get into it, I have fallen out of love with the show, the last episode I watched was the Campfire episode in Season 7. I did watch the recent Equestria Girls special but that was only because I couldn't sleep. But most importantly, I don't think I can really add anything. The episodes I have had trouble reviewing are usually ones I have differing views on such as Suited for Success... why is it always Rarity? This episode I don't have that p

Dodsley's Thoughts -MLP Season 2 Seasonal Episodes
If there was one kind of plot I would say MLP struggled with, it would be the seasonal episodes. That is true with most media, with most TV shows and movies doing similar and easy plots that merge into a sort of tasteless paste. There are exceptions even in cartoons with the likes of Futurama, Spongebob and The Simpsons being noticeable for their seasonal gold. However, MLP has never really had much success. We have 4 seasonal episodes in the shows' history and they are all passable, apart from Scare Master which ranks with some of the worst of the show. However, none of them ever seem to go past okay. The Christmas Carol episode is simply th

This show has many styles of episodes. Whether it be big two-parters, CMC episodes, heartfelt stories, there isn't much this show doesn't tackle and we'll get to that with a certain later episode, you know the one. One of the more confusing is the episodes where characters go mental. Last season saw Party Of One, a hilarious and entertaining episode where Pinkie goes even more crazy than usual. This episode focuses on Twilight and her descent into madness. Will it match the quality of Party of One? Let's find out.
This episode starts with Twilight and Spike making a checklist to make a checklist. This is before she goes mental by the way. The
